Junior cricket league starts 16 September, 2008
GABORONE - The Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) junior league for Under-13 boys starts today with 12 teams from government primary schools battling it out for the championship.
BCA development officer, Mr Girish Ramakrishna said the 12 schools are Rasesa, Tlhaakgame, Oodi, Ikageng, Mojadife, Mogobane, Itumeleng, Bophirima, Phillip Moshotle, Ben Thema, Solomon Dihutso and Botsalano.
The contest starts with games between Rasesa and Tlhaakgame and between Oodi and Ikageng. Kick-off is 13:30.
Tomorrow, Mojadife will battle against Mogobane while Itumeleng takes on Bophirima.
On Thursday, Philip Moshotle plays against Ben Thema and Solomon Dihutso faces Botsalano.
The second round will be played in the week of September 23 and the finals will be on October 16 "From the stage of popularising the game we are also trying to put the kids in a competitive environment," Mr Ramakrishna said.
There will be prizes for man of the match in all rounds until the semi-finals, after which there will be prizes for best batsman, best fielder and the best bowler.
There will also be prizes for the player of the tournament apart from the runners up and the winners of the tournament.
Meanwhile, BCA held two activities during the International Cricket Week as announced by the International Cricket Council.
The first activity was a friendly competition between schools on September 9 and 10 involving students from Oodi, Rasesa, Itumeleng, Ben Thema, Philip Moshotle and Ikageng Primary Schools.
On September 11, BCA held a one day workshop conducted by Mr Gowrishankar, an accredited cricket coach from Australia for government primary school teachers.
The objective of the workshop was to share experience, teaching methodology and the finer aspects of the game.
Teachers who participated in the workshop came from Rasesa, Oodi and Mmusi Primary Schools. BOPA
